Bergen County Fun Facts
Before Dutch and English colonists came, Bergen County was inhabited by Native American people of the Lenape nation. Some of their descendants are still here as part of the Ramapough Mountain Indian tribe, recognized in 1980. While the origin of Bergen’s name is debated, it is often attributed to the Dutch word meaning “hill” or “place of safety.”
This year, U.S. News & World Report continued to recognize the Bergen County Academies in Hackensack as one of the Best High Schools in the United States! Furthermore, In 2011, Newsweek recognized the academy students as having the second highest average SAT score of any U.S. high school.
Bergen County was one of the first four original counties of New Jersey.
